Njenga and Terem Falls Hydro Projects

ACAD supported the development of a CDM Program of Activity for small-scale renewable energy projects in Kenya and Rwanda, on the basis of two demonstration IPPs in the Mt. Elgon district of rural Western Kenya. The umbrella program enables future small projects that would not otherwise be commercially viable on their own to access carbon revenues. The 5 MW run-of river hydropower project at Njenga Falls is championed by Uni-Power Limited (UPL). The 3 MW run-of-the-river hydropower project at Terem Falls is championed by Genpro Power Systems Ltd. Each plant will add emissions-free energy to the national grid, thereby meeting the demand of about 10,000 rural households, some of which are not currently electrified. Specific transaction cost support from ACAD included POA-PDD finalization and CDM validation
